Dating app Bumble has apologised for adverts that critics said shamed women who were not sexually active.

The marketing campaign included messages such as "A vow of celibacy is not the answer" and "Thou shalt not give up on dating and become a nun".

Bumble said the ads were supposed to bring humour to "a community frustrated by modern dating".

But critics said the adverts were tasteless and ran counter to the company's stated aim of empowering women.

"In a world fighting for respect and autonomy over our bodies, it's appalling to see a dating platform undermine women's choices," wrote Jordan Emanuel, a model and actress who has talked publicly, external about her decision to refrain from sex for a year.

Yeah, I get that they were going for a "There's still hope for you" message with a humorous twist... but, I can also see why people found it insensitive.

Hopefully they'll do better with their next advert!

Intentionally or unintentionally society has the biggest obsession with the sexual activity (or lack thereof) of women. Not to mention if Bumble wants their service to appeal more to women they could always use the money for research on how to combat the gender imbalance of dating apps and other things.

💯
And when I tell ppl I’m single, I find it really awkward when they to “Aww hopefully you’ll find someone soon!” Presumptive as ppl can have different reasons for being single.

It’s incredibly patronising if you’re happy being single, as if society expects everyone to marry at a certain age -_-

well that's easy enough. start doing background checks and filtering. that'd help both sides. Maybe not be an industry that makes money off false hopes and promises?

It's true. it is incredibly patronizing. I'm under pressure in this regard because my sister due to a bought with cancer is no longer able to have kids so I'm the only one who can continue the family geneology.

Indeed... I understand they're trying to be supportive, but not everyone wants a relationship!

And yes, there was a time when it was normal for people to marry at a certain age - but, not everyone's ready for that.
