Google to put AI search results behind paywall?

Google could put some of its search results behind a paywall, according to a new report.

The company is considering charging a premium for users to get access to a version of its search engine powered by generative artificial intelligence, according to the Financial Times.

It would mark the first time that Google has put any of its core products behind a paywall. While the company does charge for some features – such as additional storage and features in its products – search has always been free for all users and funded by advertising.

There's not a lot that could jeopardise Google's dominant position as a search engine - but this could. Even if their existing search remains free, someone else will probably introduce a free AI-powered search before too long.

Even if Google's AI-powered search is excellent, I imagine few people will pay for it - especially if there's a free alternative that's good enough!

A great response from Google when DuckDuckGo and other search engines are seeking niches to pull people away from the Google sphere.

🤣🤣🤣

Google’s being Elon Musk now, making such an impulsive move!

Who needs AI search results anyways? AI is rubbish. Google has been fine without AI for years, so why does it matter if AI search results can't be used?

bah!  We don't need generative Algorithms to power search engines.

Have you used an AI-powered search before? If not, then how can you dismiss it as "rubbish"?

I personally haven't used one (and I'll judge how good it is if and when I do) - but, if it proves itself to be better at searching than Google's current methods, then Google will no longer be 'fine' without AI. They'll simply fall behind the competition, and lose their position as the world's dominant search engine.

Because Google hasn't used it up until now and it's always worked and done well without it. So there's no need to add AI search when regular searches have worked fine for decades.

I hate when AI is added to stuff

But that phenomenon isn't specific to AI: it's true of technological progress in general. Innovation tends to happen in short bursts - with long stretches of stagnation in between.

For example, when computers first came along, they revolutionised civilisation - and machines and techniques that had worked fine for decades were made obsolete. And going back further, when the Industrial Revolution happened, all the new machinery revolutionised civilisation - and pre-industrial techniques that had worked fine for centuries (if not millennia) were made obsolete.

Right now, with AI, we're in the middle of one of those 'short bursts'. We're currently getting lots of revolutionary new technology - but at some point (maybe in 5, 10, 20 or 50 years), we'll hit a wall, and things will become more stable once again.
