Some people can see at higher 'frame rate'

Fumbling a catch or mis-hitting a ball in tennis may be more likely for certain people, scientists say after discovering huge differences in the speed humans view moving images.

Trinity College Dublin conducted experiments to show that the speed of visual perception varies widely, meaning some people can “see” more information every second than others.

Scientists used a “flicker test”, which flashes a light at increasing speeds until it is blinking so quickly it appears completely still.

When they asked participants at what point the light had stopped flickering, some said they saw a steady light at just 35 blinks per second, while others still saw flashing at more than 60 flickers per second.

Not something I'd ever thought about, but I suppose there's no reason why we'd all be exactly the same in this regard! And having a higher 'frame rate' would probably help in some contexts, like sports and gaming.

I wonder whether it's possible to train this?

Thanks for sharing @ Kyng . Maybe schools need to stop putting pressure on kids to become good at throwing and catching as it’s possible not all kids are capable at such, especially possibly those with a cognitive condition. This possibly paves the way for understanding cognitive conditions affecting coordination as a wider use case?

Maybe - although I don't know how relevant the 'higher frame rate' would be for playing sports at school. I can see it being an issue in professional sports at the elite level (where that split-second might be crucial), but sports at school aren't played at that level  .

Granted, having a low 'frame rate' might make it slightly more difficult to learn throwing and catching, but unless they have some other disability, they should still be able to do it in the end :) .

The exception is when someone slams the ball in your face FTL !

Maybe that’s why I get anxiety around balls, I don’t know when it’s about to hit me… because i have a lower frame rate 😂

I find the terminology funny as it make me feel like us humans are video cards with frame rate. Hopefully I’m 180Hz at 8K, who knows 🤪 @ Kyng !!!
