Uranus and Neptune shown in true colour

It’s a colour beloved by interior designers, but it seems duck-egg blue is also splashed across our solar system, with research suggesting it is the true colour of both Uranus and Neptune.

The new work puts paid to the popular belief that Neptune has a deep blue hue, suggesting instead both planets are a similar colour – with Neptune only slightly more blue than Uranus.

“Uranus is still bland and rather boring looking, but Neptune looks fairly washed-out as well when you do the full true colour reconstruction,” said Prof Patrick Irwin, first author of the study at the University of Oxford.

Wow... while our impressions of Uranus were pretty accurate, Neptune looks very different from what I thought! And it is a shame it looks nowhere near as dramatic as it's often portrayed - but it is nice to know what's scientifically accurate :) .

Now, I wonder whether we'll see Neptune represented like this in popular culture? Or will attempts to do so fall victim to the Tiffany Problem?

I have a few jokes circulating in my mind about Uranus and its bland whiteness... I shall not repeat them here. Science is serious talk.  :)

Shame Neptune is not quite so blue. But hey-ho.

Well, science isn't always serious talk... indeed, we have an entire thread dedicated to funny things that scientists do  !

I still want to consider Neptune a very pretty, vibrant blue reminisce of the Roman god of water. & who knows, it may have had a blue hue at some point. Atmospheres, air, land can change.

Okay... at this point, I bet astronomers a wishing they'd stuck with "the Georgium Sidis" instead of going with "Uranus" -_- !
