Older people 'perceived as more moral'

A new study published in Ethics & Behavior found that older people are perceived as more moral than younger people across WEIRD (Western, Educated, Industrialized, Rich, Democratic) and non-WEIRD samples.

“In many cultures, it is said “older – wiser,” but no one has really studied it empirically. Past literature also showed that this may be true. So, we decided to test the hypothesis of whether older people are perceived as more moral than younger people. This is especially relevant as we live in the age of the cult of youth,” said study author Mariola Paruzel-Czachura, PhD (@Mariola87880133), a postdoc at the University of Pennsylvania and an associate professor at the University of Silesia in Katowice.

“Is it always bad to be old? We were curious to test it on the example of morality, as morality is the basic trait we look for in others.”

Obviously, this doesn't say anything about the moral character of any individual: shining beacons of morality exist in all age groups, as do evil sociopaths. But I guess older people can generally point to more morally good things that they've done in their lives (whereas younger people simply haven't had as much opportunity to do that yet).

(Also, when people learned right from wrong, they generally learned this from their parents and teachers, i.e. people who are older than themselves!)

I always figured this. Youngsters are expected to obey the elderly while the elderly are not required to respect kids by today’s society standards. Even if not abuse, excessive punishment can have detrimental impact on kids’ health.

It's actually fascinating how often the elderly can get away with crimes simply because no one expects them. Why they were used as drug mules because the police would often never pull over someone elderly.

I'm of the older generation. I think it has to do more with the individual than the age. I've had good morals & continue to keep them. Do we get wiser as we get older? Yes we do. We learn to re-prioritize life. We learn to not take life for granted as life is short. I think as time goes on that is what helps us have more morals. By being able to take that step back.
As for Respect. It goes both ways. The younger generation don't have manners as readily. I'll still be polite (just like for forgiveness, it's for ME to heal) but if somebody is being disrespectful, I won't stay around them. A simple Please, Thank You can go a long ways.

Our elders may have more morality than their younger counterparts, but some take it to the next level where they're overly strict or have delved deep into conservatism.
