The Xbox 360 store shuts down on July 29, 2024 on console and the marketplace website, Microsoft has announced.

According to Xbox Wire, Microsoft will cease purchases of new games, DLC, and other entertainment content from the Xbox 360 Store on the console and the Xbox 360 Marketplace, as well as stop functionality of the Microsoft Movies & TV App on the Xbox 360 console. However, this will not impact the ability to play Xbox 360 games or DLC you’ve already bought.

Well, it sure had a good run. I might want to check out the store one last time before it closes.

Given that the Xbox 360 is nearly 20 years old now, and hasn't been produced since 2016, I'm honestly surprised its storefront is still active.

Still, it did have a good run - and I hope you're able to find some nice games when you have your last look at the store!

I'm just appreciative of Xbox giving a decent amount of notice about this closure. Back when Sony originally intended to close down the PS3 digital storefront, they gave less than four months notice for it.

On the other hand, it sucks that as consoles and their respective digital content ages that all of that content is going to gradually be lost if it isn't available on PC or the current console generation, and if it isn't on anything else then that's a potential blow to game preservation. I've already seen that the closure of the Xbox 360 store is going to put more than 200+ games into a state where they can't be purchased at all, which means the only hope for those games is emulation.

I plugged in my old Xbox 360 and connected it to my internet (It's been years since I played it). I took a look at the store and haven't decided what games to buy yet, but there are a few in particular that I have my eye on. I'll probably search up some reviews of the games to help me decide what to buy.

This is why I prefer physical to digital games. As long as you have a physical copy and a working console, you're good to go! There's at least the emulation scene, but unfortunately the main 360 emulator Xenia has developers who hate "piracy"so it's hard to emulate 360 games. I'm hoping someone out there will make their own emulator, since the store will be shutting down these games need to be preserved.
