The budget retailer Wilko has said it is on the brink of collapse, with more than 12,000 jobs at risk, as the high street struggles with rising costs and lacklustre consumer demand.

The household and garden products retailer, which has about 400 stores, said it had filed a notice of intention to appoint administrators at the high court on Thursday with advisory firm PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) lined up.

PwC has been working with Wilko in recent months to try to find a buyer in an attempt to secure additional cash needed by the end of this month to keep trading.

If Wilko does collapse into administration it would be the largest retailer to do so since convenience store chain McColl’s just over a year ago – which was rescued by supermarket chain Morrisons.

Sad to see... we shop there reasonably regularly! They have quite a wide variety of household items, so they're useful when you need some random thing for the home.

Anyway, I do hope they'll be rescued - so that at least some of those 12,000 jobs can be saved!

It'd be a huge shame to lose Wilko. I sometimes shop there too.

Bad news, the chain has now gone into administration. :( Hopefully they can find a buyer that can save some of the stores.

Someone told me about this today, I was pretty shocked but also I guess it’s not completely unexpected. We shall see what happens as my town has one!

Sad to see :( .

Fortunately, the article states that there are two retailers interested in buying the chain... doesn't specify which ones, but hopefully they can save at least some of the stores!

So many retail stores have collapsed lately, or at least been struggling financially. So I'm not too surprised.
Speaking of Wilko though, I never even heard of that until the story came up in the news.

I hope at least one of the stores near me survives. Wilko is great value for garden items, small furniture, stationary, snacks, etc.

Well, sadly, efforts to find a buyer for the entire business have failed:

There are still hopes that some of the stores might be saved - but nevertheless, it's inevitable that jobs will be going :( .

Yeah, it’s gonna be a load of redundancies :(

The HMV store owner has submitted a last-minute bid to save some of the stores and jobs:

Hopefully this bid will be enough to save at least some of the stores and jobs.
