Living with roommates

What’s your experience living with roommates? Perhaps this was while at university or after moving out from your family home.

Never lived with roommates but stayed in a sharehouse when I first visited Australia a few years ago. Not something I like doing because everyone has different standards towards cleanliness in the communal areas, and you can find yourself cleaning up after other people.

I also don't like the thought of having to share bathrooms with other people. In general the thought of having to share facilities – kitchen, bathroom, etc – just doesn't work for me.

I didn't have too much trouble house sharing but I could see how problematic it could be, if you had the wrong house mates. It was worth the experience for sure, and something I can say I've done, but I wouldn't do it again.

Not something I ever did at university - and it wouldn't have appealed to me at all. I really wanted a room to myself - and the privacy that came with that :P .

I did still have to share kitchens and bathrooms, but this didn't bother me that much. The only time it got difficult was when I had one kitchen for an entire staircase (of about 15 people), and it was sometimes hard to get in to cook. Sometimes, I didn't get my dinner until 10pm :( .

Not my preference... I had to do it a few times to save money, but I never really "got along" with my roommates. And by not getting along I don't mean that we bickered or anything like that, but it's just that we did our own thing and were not really close. I always see people hang out with their roommates all the time and look like they're best friends. I could never do that, maybe I was just with the wrong people, but whatever, not doing that again :D

I lived with my best friend for one year in an apartment and we got along just fine. We would play video games together and watch TV shows and films together. We ate out quite a bit together, but I tried to watch my money a bit more carefully when I lived with him since I didn't depend on my parents to pay my rent. He moved to a different city not too far away from me, but we still rarely see each other anymore and we don't talk via text as much as we used to. The apartment life was kind of different, I wish we had a nicer one, but we went with what we could afford.
