Conservation efforts from zoos
#1
So, most of the time that zoos are mentioned on this forum, it's because of sad news. Disasters, animals being treated unfairly, and so on. I thought it would be good to have a thread shedding some light on the many positive things zoos do for species conservation.

To start things off, Dudley Zoo & Castle recently raised just over £1000 for the World Parrot Trust. Here is the instagram post for more information:

Congrats to them :D !

Since I live so near Chester Zoo, I'm spoilt for choice: I could be here all day talking about their conservation efforts  . So, I'll just list a few of the things they've done:

  • They helped save the tequila splitfin fish, which went extinct in the wild in 2003, but has now been re-introduced to its previous habitat.
  • Another ongoing project is their work with the Eastern black rhino, which is critically endangered in the wild, but whose population has been bolstered by individuals transferred from European zoos.
  • Finally, they've also had a hand in establishing "Saving Animals From Extinction (SAFE)": a project to store live cells from animals that are at risk of extinction, in the hope that they can be brought back one day if need be.

Of course, there's loads more... but that's a start!

Following pioneering conservation work by Chester Zoo, an insect species known as 'Scarce Yellow Sally' has been rediscovered in the River Dee after 28 years:

Given that they have short lifespans of only four to six weeks, this wasn't an easy project - but I'm glad it's succeeded :) !

Sadly I don't have a zoo for hours around me.  But I do love the efforts that they put in for the animals and environment.  We have taken the multiple hour long trip to visit our "local" zoo at times.

Here's a bit of a different one. Chester Zoo is planting 19,000 trees on an unused field adjacent to the zoo, to create a wildlife sanctuary:

So it's not just the animals in the zoo that they're helping: it's also the ones outside it :) !
