Oh, glass is definitely an option. I actually think you've touched on something really important there - one issue with recycling is that there aren't enough locations where the recycling is separated out into sections such as glass, paper, textiles, etc. I reckon it's easier for the recycling plants to process them (and more likely for them to actually end up being recycled) that way.
I've always liked the ideas of places where you could bring your own containers and fill them up with whatever you're buying. This would work for smaller foods like oats and lentils. Granted, the containers themselves are usually plastic in the first place, but it's much better to continually use the same plastic item again and again than to use it once and then throw it away. Granted, bringing lots of containers to stores is impractical at best, but it's another option.
