Italy has become the first Western country to block advanced chatbot ChatGPT.

The Italian data-protection authority said there were privacy concerns relating to the model, which was created by US start-up OpenAI and is backed by Microsoft.

The regulator said it would ban and investigate OpenAI "with immediate effect".

Millions of people have used ChatGPT since it launched in November 2022.

It can answer questions using natural, human-like language and it can also mimic other writing styles, using the internet as it was in 2021 as its database.

Well, I can't see any bans being sustainable long-term solutions at all. For better or worse, AI looks like it's going to have a transformative impact on society - and any nation that bans it will simply end up stuck in the past (like they'd be today if they'd banned smartphones 15 years ago, or banned the internet 30 years ago). And then of course, there's the question as to whether such a ban could be enforced effectively - and I highly doubt it could be.

With that being said, there are all kinds of legitimate reasons to be concerned about it - and privacy is one of them. (I know it's only using information that's publicly available, but it's hard to imagine it's using it in a manner that complies with privacy regulations - especially those as complex as the GDPR!). So, hopefully those can be figured out sooner rather than later.

Fantastic to see it get banned. :D :D :D More  countries should take note of this choice and also ban it. I hope the UK bans it soon.

Here are some reasons why Chat GPT should be outright banned:

1. Potential risk to data security and privacy concerns. It's created fears of potential abuse and cybersecurity risks.

2. And by relying on Chat GPT to generate responses, students and people may not develop important critical thinking and problem-solving skills. It it reduces creativity, because Chat GPT generates pre-written responses, which may limit students' and peoples' ability to express their own ideas and perspectives.

3.Chat GPT generates content for people's assignments, leading to potential plagiarism and laziness.

4.  It also hinders students' development of essential skills such as research, critical analysis, and independent thought.

5. Turns out, anything you share with ChatGPT is stored and used to further train the model! This means that the data you've shared with the tool could potentially be seen by others. Unauthorized usage of company data to train ChatGPT models could lead to a severe breach of privacy

6. And most importantly, it threatens people's jobs and livelihoods. Chat GPT could lead to lots of human jobs being lost, and entertainment like TV shows and books no longer being created by humans.

I found a petition calling for it to be banned:

Fell free to sign it if you want to see Chat GPT get banned for good.

I mean, these are all legitimate concerns - and some kind of regulation to address them would probably be wise... but, TBH, this isn't addressing anything I said in my opening post.

And also, a lot of these arguments would also have applied equally well to previous innovations (like computers and the internet) when they were new. But we didn't implement a knee-jerk ban on computers or the internet, based on looking solely at their downsides and completely ignoring their upsides. And any nation that had banned computers or the Internet would be woefully uncompetitive today.

Thanks for the petition link, but I'm afraid I won't be signing it - because I don't want the UK to be technologically stuck in the early 21st century forever and ever, while the rest of the world moves on without us.

Chat GPT isn't one of the positives of AI, tho. For the reasons mentioned in my above post. Chat GPT provides no benefits to society. Some other forms of AI are good, but Chat GPT is not one of them. I've never seen ChatGPT provide any benefits whatsoever.

Computers and internet were built to assist with life, not replace it, tho. AI is built to replace human jobs and tasks, not assist with them.

It's a petition calling for a ban in general in any many countries, not just the UK. So we wouldn't be stuck while the rest of the world moves on, because other countries would ban it too.

PS. Don't worry, I'm not at all judging you, or going to judge you (or any other members here) for disagreeing with my points. :) We all have different views and opinions on tech topics, and I respect yours, even if some of them are opposite to mine. :)

I disagree as Copilot has proven useful in generating code for software engineers, of course providing you don’t just blindly trust it and understand what it’s telling you.

As adults, we need to be responsible for how we use it. Perhaps there should be an age restriction and restrictions in high risk sectors like the public sector? I’ve seen cases where ChatGPT can be trained with wrong information by feeding it wrong information. We don’t want kids being potentially influenced by extremist views and propaganda due to certain malicious actors who may decide to misuse AI and provide it with extreme views.

ChatGPT should also have a filter on explicit, obscene and potentially harmful content.
