Foods/drinks that are acquired tastes
#1
I can't believe we haven't done this topic yet  . What are some foods and drinks that were acquired tastes for you - so, you didn't care for them the first time you had them, but now you've grown to really like them?

One of these for me was hummus. The first time I had it was in late 2017 at a cousin's wedding, and I didn't think much of it - perhaps because it was cold and I had it on its own :P . However, in more recent years, I've found I rather like it (although I still don't have it on its own: I need something to go with it, which is usually going to be some kind of flatbread)

What about you?

Interesting one :) . I've tried it once and found it to be too strong for my tastes - but maybe I just haven't given it a proper chance yet  !

A food that’s an acquired taste? Or drink. Well…Drinking coffee black (on its own with nothing else added).

i love the flavour of coffee overall, but without at least milk, it can be just too bitter. Afterall, as much as I love dark chocolate, too….I do not think I could eat a 100% dark chocolate bar with no sugar/sweetener in it🤣 haha….same logic applies to coffee for me (and, yes, I drink coffee more for the flavour than the caffine by the way. I even only ever own decafe in my house :P regular coffee can be just too high in caffine in general, too, anyways. If I need caffine, I prefer milder sources, like diet sodas and teas. And chocolate.)

and this is my first post of the day on the COFFEE house forum :P epic!

But, yeah, drinking darker coffee (and eating darker chocolate too as well) tends to be something probably a lot of people need to build up to. I have went down to only one Splenda instead of two in my store bought coffees lately, though. Mostly the milk itself is enough for me these days.

Edit: and as for foods I grown to like resently that I didn’t before (just read the first post so might mention that), I really like hummus now too.

Yeah, I don't have black coffee unless I've run out of milk :P . Nothing to do with the taste: I just don't have the patience to sit and wait for it to cool down, so I end up burning my tongue  !

Also, while we're on the subject of coffee: my sister's started having it unsweetened, and found the she prefers it that way. However, I still have sugar or syrup in mine :P .

I'll agree with hummus. I wasn't sure about it at first, but now I can palate it.

Also...

Olives.
Sprouts.

I feel like I have loads of example for foods I didn't like for their particular tastes and now really do. I'll add it here if I can remember them.

Yeah, olives are rather salty for my tastes :P . I'll have them if they're with something else that dilutes the saltiness (for example, feta!), but I'm not a fan of them on their own.

Another one that I would add: salted peanuts.

The first time I had them (in January), I didn't really take to them - but I still ate them anyway, because they became a valuable source of protein in the absence of dairy. But after having them a few times, I began to rather like them :) !

You went that long without them? The honey roasted are good too. I love peanuts. They make my mouth slightly itchy if I have too many because of my allergy but it isn’t bad enough to worry whoops.

Tomatoes for me. Used to not be able to stand them at all really. However, now, I enjoy them in a good salad, especially if the dressing is good.

I am also going with mayo. Not a fan of it generally but in a wrap it’s mmmm.

Yeah, I just never really bothered trying them, since I fell into a pattern of eating the same things over and over  .

And I'll have to try the honey roasted peanuts: I checked the ingredients, and they contain no major allergens other than the peanuts themselves :P . (Several "May contains", but on my diet, I don't need to worry about those except in the case of chocolate that may contain milk)

Thanks for the recommendation :) !
