I happen to own all three of the original "Fallout" games... but I'm unable to play them due to the fact that I lack a PC to load them on.
After months of trying to force my way in through a very obscure, awkward and frankly kind of insulting game of hunting down the rare DOS version of the first game and convincing my tablet to run it, I gave up, pretty much resigned to stay on the outside of one of gaming's classic franchises.
... But then I found out that there is a PS2 version.
"Brotherhood of Steel" is a game that, more than anything else, reminded me of how important it is to try things out for yourself, not letting the weight of brutalizing reviews and heated comments get in the way of your enjoyment. If I had listened to the overwhelming amount of negative critiques this game has had, I would have never tried it. And I think there's a lesson there.
Maybe not having experience with any other entry on the franchise was a blessing on disguise here, but I found a quality game regardless and one that I was really addicted to. Indeed, "Brotherhood of Steel" remains one of my all-time favorite PS2 games and the only thing I'm willing to critique it for is the very awkward camera angle they chose to portray most of the action (seriously, what the heck, is almost as bad as those PS1 Star Wars games, although not as nauseating nor vomit-inducing).
Was this game great? For me, it was and I honestly can't tell where all the hatred came from. Sure, it is technically a watered-down version, but most PC games that make it to a console suffer from the same fate. I honestly can't tell why anyone would be prevented from enjoying this game on its own merit... and that's coming from someone who was forced to rage quit it multiple times on the later levels AND someone whose PS3 got overwhelmed by the amount of crap on the screen and forcefully reset itself during the final encounter (and that will never fail to be hilarious - my PS3 can handle the very biggest games of the last decade, but watch out for those low-res polygons! It reminds me of computers today struggling to move Flash games XD).
Should YOU try it? I'd say so! It is fun as hell at some points and the story kept me engaged throughout the whole game and carried me through it. I also didn't find the side quests and maze-like level design to be on the offending side of things. Pretty good time overall. Oh! And...
I enjoyed it a lot!
