Disney has released the first teaser trailer for the live-action remake of The Little Mermaid.

The film, set to be released in 2023, stars Halle Bailey as the mermaid Ariel, Javier Bardem as King Triton, Melissa McCarthy as Ursula and Jonah Hauer-King as Prince Eric.

Footage of the film was unveiled at Disney’s annual D23 fan event.

The teaser includes a snippet of Bailey taking on “Part of Your World”, one of the best-known numbers from Disney’s original 1989 musical animation.

Fans have shared their reactions to the teaser on social media, with responses being particularly effusive about Bailey’s singing.

Yes, I have to agree - she has done a great job of singing, at least in what little we saw!

Of course, this is where I usually go on about these live-action remakes being "unnecessary" and "cash-grabs" - but, while I still believe that, I don't think there's anything I can say that isn't just repeating myself from a previous live-action remake thread. And besides, they haven't all been bad - so, let's hope this is one of the better ones :D .

I’m still not looking forward to it; It’ll probably make Ariel too invincible and bland.

Seen a lot of debate on social media about the Ariel actress choice. I’m happy with who they chose and I feel that she will be excellent at the role. I’m sure they’ll be plenty of people who enjoy this despite the amount of dislikes the trailer got.

Yeah, I myself have no problem with the actress, but I get why some people do. I think a lot of people have a nostalgic attachment to Ariel as she appears in the original film - and in this new film, that's essentially being taken away from them. (For the majority of the critics, I don't think it's about her race specifically: it's about changing the image they grew up with)

With that being said, as someone who's never seen the original (and thus has no nostalgic attachment to Ariel's original appearance): I wish Halle Bailey all the best with this. Even if her portrayal of Ariel isn't what we're used to, I hope people will at least give it a chance - and I hope she's able to silence the critics with a great performance on-screen :) .

But if she isn't able to do that, then we can always just go back to watching the original (which I'm guessing is what will soon happen with 90% of these live-action remakes anyway  )

It actually looks pretty good. And Halle Bailey did pretty awesome with that song. Will likely watch it at some point when its out.

Friends, I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but from the comments I saw on TikTok, to the surprise of SOME, it is about race.

There are people who have not read the Hans Christian Andersen book of the same name, and believe deep down that Ariel is White.  They've taken that belief so far to "recreate" posters for the movie with such titles as "Da Lil Mermaid" and "The Little Slave" just to name a couple.  On top of that, they've gone so far as taking the topic to "Let's recreate black-led movies with an all-white cast.  For example, let's redo 'Roots' and 'The Color Purple'"

If you think racism isn't a thing, what do you think now?

I think I ought to clarify my previous comments here.

Of course, there are some people for whom this *is* about race (and in particular, those appalling things that have been posted on TikTok do need to be condemned). However, I think the racists who made those images are a vocal minority: they're not representative of those who simply don't want their childhood nostalgia being changed.

When people say, "Those who criticise this film are being racist"... sadly, that is sometimes the case; however, I don't think it's the full picture.

I don't have any problem with the cast, I just think Disney is highly hypocritical by forcing all this "diversification" on us now.

Pretty much every single show and animated series now stars a kid or adult from a minority, acting all righteous, and I just can't forget the last 30 or so years in which the Latin friends, for instance, were ALWAYS the troublemakers, the bad friends, the ones from broken homes, the ones who stole, the bad influences, etc.

Disney likes to swear allegiance to the flag of diversity and they are the ones who burned it and wiped themselves with the remains for most of the century.

Well, the film is out now - and, the reviews are very mixed:

https://www.metacritic.com/movie/the-lit...023?ref=hp

Seems there's a lot of praise for Halle Bailey's performance (and, in particular, for her powerful vocals); however, the criticisms of "unnecessary cash-grab" are still in effect, as they are for all Disney live-action remakes :P .
