Serena Williams has suggested she is set to retire from tennis, saying she will be "evolving away" from the sport after the US Open.
Writing for Vogue, the American 23-time Grand Slam singles champion said she is moving towards "other things that are important to me", adding she does not like the word "retirement".
In an accompanying Instagram post, she wrote that "the countdown has begun".
"I'm gonna relish these next few weeks," the 40-year-old said.
Williams made her singles return at Wimbledon in June after a lengthy injury lay-off that had led to speculation about her retirement.
Whether this means she's retiring completely, or she'll be playing occasionally when she feels like it, is not 100% clear - but it does sound as though tennis won't be front and centre of her life any more. And, while I've never been a major fan of hers, I am sorry to see her go: she's had an absolutely glittering career, with her 23 Singles Grand Slams being second only to Margaret Court (it's a shame she looks set never to get that record-equalling 24th, unless she somehow pulls it off at the US Open!)
Good luck to her in her future .
