With 29 of the 32 qualifying spots settled, the 2022 FIFA World Cup draw took place earlier today. Full details are on FIFA's website - but here, I'll list the groupings that emerged from the draw:
Group A
Qatar
Netherlands
Ecuador
Senegal
Group B
England
USA
Iran
TBA (either Scotland or Wales or Ukraine)
Group C
Argentina
Mexico
Poland
Saudi Arabia
Group D
France
Denmark
Tunisia
TBA (either Peru or Australia or United Arab Emirates)
Group E
Spain
Germany
Japan
TBA (either Costa Rica or New Zealand)
Group F
Belgium
Croatia
Canada
Morocco
Group G
Brazil
Serbia
Switzerland
Cameroon
Group H
Portugal
Ghana
Uruguay
South Korea
Looks like England aren't in too bad a group - although, if a second Home Nation qualifies, it's a shame they'll be in the same group as us. I was hoping to have two nations to cheer for in two different groups!
But, who's the "Group of Death" here? Myself, I think Group E as a strong claim to the title: it has two top European sides, one of the strongest Asian sides, and one underdog team (and if it's Costa Rica, then, they were in this situation in 2014: nobody gave them any hope against England, Italy and Uruguay, and they topped the group !). Group A also looks pretty tough: the Netherlands are historically among the strongest teams never to have won the World Cup; Senegal are the highest-ranking team in Africa right now; Ecuador are ranked lower but are no slouches; and Qatar... well, let's just say I don't feel sorry for them.
So, what are your thoughts on this draw?
