Blue spix's macaw extinct in wild

Researchers say the striking blue species of parrot that inspired the animated movie Rio probably went extinct nearly 20 years ago.

In the movie, the last-remaining male Spix’s macaw flies from Minnesota, US to Rio de Janeiro in Brazil to find the last remaining female.

Spoiler alert: the pair meet, fall in love and rear a chick.

But, sadly, that’s not how it played out in real life.

Because the species has been presumed extinct, in the wild based on findings in a new study from BirdLife International.

Not really surprising, since I knew it was exceedingly rare in the wild, but it's still sad :(

The bird does still exist in captivity, so I guess there's still some hope for it, but it's not looking good....

Yeah, I saw this. A real shame, especially as it's such a striking species.

thing is we have been wrong about a species being extinct before, the rainforest is still vast even if much smaller now than it was before. they still have places they can hide and perhaps live in the wild without us knowing. Still it is sad to see and we as a species should look at the alarming trend of extinctions going on due to what we are doing unsustainably.

I kinda remember that too. Although, from what I've been able to find (for example, their 2016 assessment), the wording they used was "Critically endangered and possibly extinct in the wild". So, that may be what I'm thinking of here :P .
