There have been thousands of different models of car produced over the years. Some of these have been great: perhaps because they were very fast and fun to drive; perhaps because they were very practical and reliable; or maybe because they had great off-road capabilities and could go just about anywhere. However, there have been other cars that were none of those things: they were simply terrible at what they were designed to do. This thread is dedicated to those rust buckets in the latter group: if you know of any cars that failed horribly, then this is the place to talk about them :P .

I'll start with an infamous car from the 1970s, known as the Triumph TR7:

At the time, British Leyland had ambitions to conquer the American sports car market - and, in order to achieve that, this is what they came up with. Unfortunately, there were several problems that doomed this venture from the start:

  • The model was badged as a Triumph - which American consumers didn't associate with modern, flashy sports cars. Instead, they were more likely to be familiar with the MG brand;

  • The car stuck to front-engine design philosophies from the 1960s - at a time when sports cars were shifting to a mid-engine layout;

  • British Leyland executives insisted that the car had to be on sale before the end of 1975. Considering the project was approved in 1971, that sounds like a reasonable amount of time - but, given how lofty their ambitions were, it wasn't really enough :-/ .

In the end, they did manage to get the car on sale by the end of 1975. However, they did it by cutting corners wherever possible... including skipping over the final testing. The consequences of that decision were, predictably, disastrous: the car was beset with build quality problems and reliability issues. On top of this, the unconventional styling wasn't a great hit - so, few people bought a TR7, and those who did were unhappy with it. Eventually, they did manage to revise the styling and fix many of the build quality issues, and a V8 model was added to the range - but, by then, it was too late. The final nail in the coffin was the 1979 oil crisis, which caused a collapse in demand for V8 sports cars - and, in 1981, the very last TR7 rolled off the production line.

So, do you know if any more horrible or unsuccessful cars that could go in this thread?
