Random Book Facts
#1
Simple thread here: just post and discuss random facts about books :P .

I'll start with:

1) J.K. Rowling wrote and re-wrote the first chapter of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone a great many times (she once said "about 15 times", but another site claims it was 155 times). But, however many there were, she discarded most of them because they gave too much away (and in fact, she claims that if you combined all of her discarded first chapters of Philosopher's Stone, then you'd get almost the whole plot of the entire series  )

So, do you have any other interesting book-related facts that you'd like to share?

Not sure if this counts since it's not that random, but I will post it anyway my late grandfather wrote and got published some history books. I once looked them up and found them available to buy on ebay and an online old book store (not sure if they are still available, since it was a while a go now). If this isn't random enough then please feel free to remove. I am pretty sure my dad still has them all somewhere will have to ask next time I see him.

Don't worry, it's fine. By "Random book facts", I really just mean "Book facts that don't fit into any other thread" - so, your post fits the bill :) .

But, that's awesome :O . I hope you're able to find them!

If my dad still does have them then I might post pictures of them. Will have to see if I feel comfortable or not (I just value my privacy that's all).

Yeah, that's fair enough. If you're not comfortable with posting them completely in the open, then you could always post them in a members-only part of the board (like Diaries and Personal) - but, it's entirely up to you. If you decide in the end that you don't want to post pictures of them at all, then I understand completely :) .

3. Tolkien never figured out what the origin of Orcs was and didn’t like the idea of “ if you’re an orc you have to be bad.”(Hence, I’m going to include some Nickelodeon’s Avatar style humanization for the enemy forces in Lord of the Rigs.)

5. There's an official Klingon dictionary, that was first published in 1985.

According to an anecdote that my mum told me, a book shop placed this in the "Science Fiction" section, and nobody bought it... but when they placed it in the "Dictionaries" section (between Japanese and Korean), it sold very well!

6) Richard Adams couldn't find a publisher for "Watership Down" and almost gave up on it.

Wow, that surprises me :O ! But it seems to be quite common with works that later go on to be highly successful (for example, J.K. Rowling had trouble finding a publisher for Harry Potter).

Next fact:

7) William Shakespeare is the only author to have his own number in the Dewey Decimal system (his number is 822.33).
