A lot of us love Discord: it's essentially IRC and Skype on steroids, and for a lot of people, it's replaced those platforms . However, in this thread, I'm going to be considering an alternate world, in which they decided to change one small thing at launch:
Instead of making the 'Dark' theme the default for all users, they make the 'Light' theme the default.
Now, Discord's 'Light' mode is infamous for being overly bright. IMO, it's one of the worst 'Light' modes I've ever seen (and I've already criticised it in the "Light or dark themes?" thread ). Indeed, it's become something of a meme, as you can see in the following video:
But, supposing they do launch with this as their default mode, what happens?
Let's get speculating!

- How many of their users switch to the Dark mode that we're all familiar with? (This would still exist in this alternate universe; however, it'd be a setting that'd need to applied by the user, instead of just being the default mode of Discord)
- If people don't find out that Dark mode exists, do they just reject Discord on sight, and never get into the habit of using it regularly (and, more importantly, telling their friends about it)? Indeed, is it possible that Discord never achieves critical mass, and never becomes popular???
- If Discord never becomes popular, then what happens? Does something else similar become popular in its place - and, if so, what might that be?
Let's get speculating!
