Over the course of the millennia, the world's populations and demographics have fluctuated massively: ethnic groups have come and gone, and in many cases spread out far away from their original homeland. Within these demographic shifts, there will be some interesting oddballs and anomalies - and, this is the place to post them.
I'll start with:
1) The island of Ireland still has a smaller population than it did before the 1845-47 potato famine. Before the famine, it had a population of 8.1 million - but by the early 1900s, it had fallen below 5 million. Even in 2016, it had only recovered to 6.6 million.
2) There are more people of Puerto Rican descent in the mainland United States than in Puerto Rico. As of 2019, there were 5,828,706 in the mainland USA, whereas Puerto Rico had a total population of 3,193,694 (not all of whom are native to the island, of course!)
So, do you know any more?
