About a year into the scenario, something happened that temporarily distracted me from building my line to Minneapolis.
The South seceded from the United States, and civil war broke out. I was expected to aid the war effort on behalf of the Union - and in order to do that, I would have to ship three loads of oil to one of the ports along the Mississippi River. Since oil was one of the key cargoes for the Silver Medal objective, I was more than happy to do this .
So, I built another railway line in south-western Wisconsin. There are three stations: one in Madison, one in the Mississippi River port of Prairie du Chien, and one seemingly in the middle of nowhere between Mineral Point and Monroe. However, this third station is near three oil wells (which, annoyingly, blend in with the grass on the map, so it's almost impossible to see them ):

After this, I built two more lines, connecting Madison to Milwaukee and Fond du Lac. Now, there are trains taking oil to the port in Prairie du Chien, and then carrying imported goods back to all three of those cities. Also, there's a train taking grain to the distillery in Waukesha, and then carrying alcohol back to Madison:

Quite a substantial network, given that I'm only three years into the scenario. But I did have to borrow quite a lot of money to build all of these lines, so I'm quite heavily in debt !
