Wow, a pretty eclectic set of countries at the top :O . I wonder why there was so much growth in Azerbaijan?

(Of course, it could just be that there were very few people before. After all, if there's one birdwatcher in the country, and then another person gets into birdwatching, then the number of birdwatchers in the country has doubled - but, how much has it grown really :P ?)

Here's one that shows the relative sizes of atoms of each element:
[Image: tFx87tF.png]
(Source: ThoughtCo)

You'll notice that, as you work from left to right, the atoms tend to get smaller. This is counter-intuitive, since the size of the nucleus increases as you work from left to right. The reason for this pattern, in simple terms, is that the charge of the nucleus increases as you go from left to right - and so, the force pulling the electrons in gets stronger, which leads to them orbiting closer in, which makes the atom smaller.

(I'll also note that atoms are mostly empty space and don't have a clear 'edge', so there are several different ways to define the 'size' of an atom. As a result, you might notice that other 'atomic radius' charts, like this one, look substantially different)

Here's an animated one, showing the history of the most-subscribed YouTubers since 2006. This is aimed at individuals, so they've excluded most channels owned by large corporations, such as YouTube Music and Vevo (however, it seems that they've made an exception for T Series :P ):

Is it bad that I don't know who half of these are :-/ ?

It's been a while since I've posted anything in here :P . So, here's one that shows a breakdown of all human deaths during the 20th century:

Click to enlarge
(Click to enlarge)

You can read more about it on the original Information Is Beautiful page, and you can see their raw data here.

Unfortunately, it's not perfect :( . The creators acknowledge that some of these figures are just ball-park estimates, and some deaths are going to be double-counted (they've used dotted lines to pair up some likely overlaps). Also, because this is several years old, some of the sources are just dead links now. (For example, I thought 14 million sounded rather high for "Conflicts waged by the US in the name of democracy", so I went to check the sources; however, all I got in there was a dead link -_- )

With that said, it seems it still does a good job of providing a broad overview, even if some of the specifics are open to quibbles.

Here's a fun little one, based on the Economist Intelligence Unit's Democracy Index, which ranks countries on a scale of 0 to 10 based on how democratic they are:

[Image: 6GT0hcL.png]
(Source: Reddit)

The thing about the left-hand bar is that it includes the Democratic Republic of the Congo (which is a failed state), and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (which is, well, North Korea) - so, those two countries drag the average waaaay down!

Railway passengers in the UK each year, from 1830 to 2019:

[Image: qKbAUz0.png]
(Source: Absolutelypuremilk; View licence terms)

It rose until around the time of World War I, then gradually declined for most of the 20th century, until it started increasing sharply over the past 25 years.

I don't know what the figure for 2020 will be; however, I suspect it's going to look very odd on an 1830 to 2100 graph!!!

Just look at this graph. I've never seen such a steep curve ever. Never thought that a population graph of humanity would blow my mind even in the wildest dreams of mine.

Since there's already an "Interesting Graphs, Tables and Charts" thread, I've merged this one into that :) .

But yes, it is quite mind-blowing when presented like that :P . Most of the time, this graph only shows the last few hundred years (or maybe the last 1,000) - but not the last 12,000, like this version of the graph does :lol: .

Of course, that upward trajectory's not necessarily likely to continue - but for now, it's quite spectacular!

A Venn diagram showing which glyphs appear in:

  • The Greek Alphabet (top left);
  • The Latin Alphabet (top right);
  • The Russian Cyrillic Alphabet (bottom)

[Image: GfnGN6W.png]

Do note that, just because a glyph is present in more than one alphabet doesn't mean it represents the same letter in each one. (For example, 'H' appears in all three alphabets, but it represents three different letters :lol: . We use it to represent a 'h' sound, but Cyrillic uses it to represent a 'n' sound, and Greek uses it to represent a long 'ee' sound)

Also, I'm a little surprised that the Greek 'Λ' and the Cyrillic 'Л' are treated as one and the same - but the Greek 'Δ' and the Cyrillic 'Д' are not :-/ .

If I remember what I've read correctly, I believe at some point the population is expected to plateau logarithmically.

Price Changes

I'm not sure what to make of the "more expensive" goods and services - although the realizations can be quite sobering. In any case, I supposed it makes sense that the more technology-oriented products generally become more affordable over time.
