It may shock you to learn that, in the 1960s, there were serious proposals to demolish all of this. Thankfully, these proposals generated equally serious opposition, and the buildings are still standing today .
After all that was lost in World War 2? What kind of idiot would even fathom destroying something like that? It's like spitting on the face of a continent in which nothing was holy for a time and most of its signature architecture went up in flames and rubble.
And you'd think people in London of all places would learn how to appreciate the importance of keeping historical buildings standing... it'd be like if you bombarded Stalingrad all over again.
