Most of us will be familiar with the division of Germany into American, British, French and Soviet zones after World War II (the first three of which would become West Germany, and the last of which would become East Germany). However, some of us might not know that there was a proposal to divide Japan into American, British, Chinese and Soviet zones, along similar lines:

This could well have been put into effect following a successful invasion of Japan; however, after the nuclear bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan surrendered, and this plan was left on the table. But, what if this plan had been implemented, and Japan had been divided into these four zones - which then potentially become a 'North Japan' and a 'South Japan'?

But, what if this plan had been implemented, and Japan had been divided into these four zones - which then potentially become a 'North Japan' and a 'South Japan'?
Some things to think about:
- Is there ever a war between the Soviet north and the Allied south, or is an uneasy peace in Japan maintained?
- From 1945 to 1949, the Chinese zone is administered by the Republic of China (ROC). However, in 1949, Mao Zedong's communist revolution ousts the ROC from mainland China, and creates the People's Republic of China (PRC). So, who controls the Chinese zone of Japan thereafter? Is it the PRC; is it the continuing ROC based in Taiwan; or is China no longer involved with the administration of Japan?
- Does Japan reunite some time around 1990 (as Germany did), or does the division between North Japan and South Japan last until this day?
- Is Japan still the same economic and cultural power in this timeline as it is in OTL? Or does this timeline have fewer Westerners driving Japanese cars, watching anime, and playing Nintendo games? (Maybe Nintendo either never enters the video game market, or never establishes itself outside Japan - and we end up in a version of the "What if Nintendo never existed?" timeline?)
What are your thoughts?
