Tennis Result Reports - Kyng - 08-03-2018

This is a place to put all tennis results that aren't worthy of their own threads. Grand Slams will generally have their own discussion threads; however, most other stuff will go in here.

I'll start with the following result from earlier this week, at the Silicon Valley Classic:

United Kingdom Johanna Konta def. United States Serena Williams [6/PR] 6-1 6-0

Apparently, it's the worst defeat of Serena's entire professional career :wtf: . Up until now, she'd never failed to win at least two games in a match!

From the final of the Rogers Cup on Sunday:

Spain Rafael Nadal [1] def Greece Stefanos Tsitsipas 6-2 7-67-4

Congrats to Nadal - but, it has to be said, Tsitsipas made a major impact at this tournament. In order to reach the final, he got past Dominic Thiem, Novak Djokovic, Alexander Zverev, and Kevin Anderson :O

I'll definitely look forward to seeing more of him in the future!

Okay, now we know what was going on with Serena Williams during the Konta match. Earlier that day, she learned that the killer of her half-sister had been set free:

Wow, I can absolutely understand why she was playing so far from her best on that day :'( . It must have been impossible for her to focus properly, given the circumstances....

Well, Kyle Edmund won his first ATP title, at the European Open in Antwerp:

United Kingdom Kyle Edmund [1] def. France Gaël Monfils [6] 3-6 7-67-2 7-67-4

Congrats to him! Hopefully it won't be his last :D .

A total stunner from the final of the Paris Masters today:

Russia Karen Khachanov def. Serbia Novak Djokovic [2] 7-5 6-4

Congrats to Khachanov on winning his first ATP Masters 1000 title! I'm pretty sure NOBODY saw that coming :wtf: .

RE: Tennis Result Reports - Paul - 11-06-2018

Ash Barty winning a WTA tournament on the weekend too. She's gonna be in the Top 16 for the Oz Open. Hopefully she does better than Stosur always did.

RE: Tennis Result Reports - Kyng - 11-06-2018

Congrats to her :)

Let's hope so. Far too many players, particularly on the women's side, seem to have a great breakthrough year only to completely collapse the following year, but we'll see.

Simona Halep will end the year as no. 1!

Yep, congrats to her :) . She's been there or thereabouts for several years now, but she never quite got the breakthrough that would propel her to the very top of the game. That was until this year, when she did get that breakthrough by winning the French Open. Who knows where she'll go from there?

RE: Tennis Result Reports - Jarkko - 02-23-2019

Canada Félix Auger-Aliassime has made the semis of an ATP 500 event in Rio de Janeiro, beating Spain Jaume Munar 6-3, 6-4. He hasn't dropped a set in Rio, even beating 15th-ranked (and second-seeded) Italy Fabio Fognini two rounds earlier, 6-2, 6-3. He faces Uruguay Pablo Cuevas in the semis.

Seriously, I have big hopes for this kid. He is already in select company:

- youngest qualifier for an ATP Challenger main draw (14 1/2 years)
- First player born in the 2000s to be ranked in the main ATP ranking
- youngest player to win an ATP Challenger main draw match (not quite 15)
- youngest player to break the top 800 (was #749 by his 15th birthday)
- seventh-youngest ATP Challenger title winner
- second-youngest (after Richard Gasquet) to win multiple ATP Challenger Titles
- youngest player since Rafa Nadal in 2002 to crack the top 200.
- Only Richard Gasquet had more titles for someone 17 or under (5 to Felix's 3 - same number as Novak Djokovic and J.M. Del Potro)
- Youngest player to defend an ATP Challenger title (he'll be going for a threepeat if he plays Lyon later this year)
