A 3D model has been created of a triangular Scottish castle described as "unique among British castles".
It is part of wider efforts to digitally document all of Historic Environment Scotland's sites and objects.
The Rae project - named in tribute to 19th Century explorer John Rae - is about 40% complete.
Caerlaverock Castle, in Dumfries and Galloway, is one of the latest sites to be added.
HES has released the images to let people continue to enjoy the building's "pleasing geometry" during lockdown.
It's a very nice model
. If you want to explore it some more, then you can view it from all angles
here. Or, if you want to read more about the Rae Project itself (and some of the other things they've been digitising), then you can do that
here.
(Strange how I've ended up starting two topics about Scottish fortifications today... but, they're largely unrelated to one another, and it's just the way the chips have fallen
)

i wonder if this means they might do this for other locations other than just castles?

Yeah, I believe so. I did link to the
Historic Environment Scotland's page about the project in my opening post, and it seems they're doing churches and abbeys as well as castles (and, presumably, they're doing other historic sites too).

Castles have always fascinated me. I have always wanted to explore one in real life. Now I get to pretend I'm exploring one without actually being there.

Yeah, I always enjoyed visiting castles. It's not something I do
that often any more (I think the last time was about a year ago), but it's something I used to do a lot.
I haven't been to this specific one, though, since I've never been to Scotland
.
