Facebook launches dating service - Kyng - 09-09-2019

Facebook has long been the place where everyone from college students to divorcées scope out their romantic interests. Now Facebook users in the United States can officially use the social network as a dating service—complete with specialized profiles, a matchmaking algorithm, and more. Facebook Dating, which began rolling out in other countries last year and launches in the US today, gives users ages 18 and up access to a suite of features designed to help them find a meaningful relationship. Plenty of them will be familiar to anyone with experience on other dating apps, but a few options take unique advantage of Facebook's biggest asset—its extensive cache of data on you and all your friends.

Facebook Dating lives within the existing Facebook app, but to use it you need to set up a separate profile. The only information carried over is your name and age. The service will present you with potential matches based on your location, indicated preferences, and other factors. You can also choose to match with people who attend the same Facebook events or are part of the same Facebook groups. One thing it won't show you are your existing Facebook friends—that option is turned off by default.

Facebook is also using Dating's US debut to launch several new privacy and security features within the service. And, of course, it's integrating Instagram into Dating. Which is not surprising since the company has been bringing its platforms closer together in various ways all year.

Yeah, this isn't something I'd have any interest in using. I don't use dating apps anyway, and it seems like the only advantage that this one has is "Facebook can tune its match-making algorithm better because it has all your data" -_- .

So, will it succeed?

Headdesk

As long as they don't start trying to advertise it to me. If they do, then it'll be annoying enough that I might consider leaving the platform for good.

As Bubsy always said, what could possibly go wrong?

The fact they sell your data isn't reason enough?

Government can already do that without your consent anyway, i know dmv sure does.  The day i registered my car i got calls about "renewing the factory warranty" which is a scam, but they got my info from dmv so nothing i can due.  Shame i cant sue dmv for it.

Isn't Facebook already a dating service as it is?

If it involves screwing people over, I guess.

But hey turns out Facebook might already know way more then anyone (other then advertisers) want.

Isn't that exactly the kind of thing that GDPR was supposed to put a stop to :-/ ?

It's pretty strict about regular personal data - but it's even stricter about what it deems "sensitive personal data" (which this falls squarely under). Out of all the legal bases for processing sensitive data, I can't imagine that passing this data to Facebook falls under that (unless these people gave "explicit consent" for these intimate details to be shared with Facebook - but I can't imagine that many would)

I know it only applies to EU citizens - but, in practice, most companies seem to extend GDPR's protections to everybody, regardless of where they're from...

Seems that the launch in Europe has been delayed. It was due to take place on Valentine's Day, but that plan was scrapped at the last minute because Facebook hadn't adequately demonstrated the privacy of the whole thing:

Sadly, not surprising -_- .

I deleted all of my social network accounts, so I guess this is a no go for me.
