"Yes, I vote we go up," Sean agreed. "I will admit, I have a bad feeling about that light... but, I've had enough of dark tunnels. You lead the way, Albany."

Albany agreed with the others - it was about time they had some light. So she took her first step upwards onto the cold stone stairway. And then she stopped, and looked back at her companions.

"Guys, there are a bunch of different pictures on these stairs. I think it's some kind of puzzle."

Realising that they still couldn't really see, she took a hand of each of them and brought them to the first step. She could quite clearly see three different segments to each step. Each was a head, torso and back of a different animal.

"I might be a while with this, guys!" she called back to them.

Moving the stone pieces around, she was able to create a picture of a crocodile from the first step, which then sat in place so that she could climb up one level. The next was a tapir, and the next some kind of big cat. Every time she completed one step, she went back and helped the other two climb up onto it, until they could also see the animal parts on each step from the light above them.

"This is fun!" she chimed out, once they were halfway up.

Once Sean was accustomed to the somewhat brighter lights in this section of the passage, he began to examine the remaining slabs of stone. The first one he saw resembled the snout of some kind of brown rodent, like a mouse or a rat. Then, on the opposite side of the stairway, he spotted a torso and legs, which appeared to come from some furry grey mammal, such as a bear.

Suddenly, however, something clicked.

"That's a womble :D !" he exclaimed, as he positioned these three pieces together on the next step. "We are underground, after all - and we're trying to get overground :hehe: ..."

Unfortunately for Sean, when he attempted to assemble the step, the snout wouldn't fit onto the other two pieces. "That's wrong, isn't it :( ?"

"Hmm...I don't know if the Mayardians ever knew about the wombles of Wimbledon common..." Albany mused. "Maybe it's a Monito del monte! They're these really cute critters that live in the forests in South America!"

She moved around the middle slab, looking for a furry body.

"See if you can find something with a prehensile tail" she said to Sean, who was in front of the third slab.

Greg was lagging behind the group as usual. He gazed lazily at the slabs. "This is dumb." he complained with a yawn.

"Hey!" Sean scowled. "To be fair, it is quite a creative puzzle... and, it is harder than it looks."

He then returned to searching for the remaining puzzle pieces - in line with Albany's suggestion. Sure enough, there were two pieces, tucked away behind the bottom step, that had the right kind of brown fur and tail. These clicked straight into place - and then, it became apparent that the remaining furry pieces were just spare ones that didn't belong to any animal. The Mayardians were often crafty like that!

Still, it didn't take too much longer before Sean pieced together an reticulated python from three of the remaining pieces - and, finally, a dolphin for the top step. As he climbed over, he stared down another long, well-lit corridor - with another little box standing about halfway down it.

"Shall we go and see what's there?"

RE: Three Keys to Freedom - Pyrite - 04-01-2021

"Yes!" Albany chimed. "I want to see what's in the box!"

She was about to bolt forward when suddenly her brain caught up with her.

"Hmm...maybe we should go slowly in case there's a trap?"

RE: Three Keys to Freedom - Megan - 04-10-2021

Greg snorted. "Just go. What's the worst that could happen? Unless you're scared..." he said pushing Albany ahead.

RE: Three Keys to Freedom - Kyng - 04-13-2021

Sean decided it would be prudent to follow Albany's advice - and so, he tip-toed down down the corridor, keeping an eye out for potential traps. However, once Greg dashed past both him and Albany, and didn't fall into any traps, he decided it was safe just to make a run for it.

The trio ended up in a small chamber, containing a little obsidian box sat atop a pedestal. When Sean opened it up, he found six cans of peaches: enough for two each. Clearly, the Mayardians were a confusing bunch: they were perfectly willing to trap innocent people, but then, they took good care of them once they were trapped...

However, that wasn't all that was in the box. Underneath one of the cans was another obsidian gear, this one marked in the shape of a slingshot. Of course, it had an accompanying scroll, which explained to Sean exactly what it did. "This turns your gem into a sort of hand cannon, which you can use to give the gems' powers to others... or to monsters :hehe: ..."

Sadly, this was the end of their current tunnel - and they would have to turn back and try another one. However, perhaps the next one would give them a chance to test out their new toy?

Albany didn't take too kindly to Greg's manhandling of her - indeed, she tried to fight back a bit. Sadly, he was a lot stronger than her and she found herself being pushed along a corridor towards the box.

Once at the end, she huffed and turned her back to him. Her annoyance was slightly soothed by the sight of peaches, one of her favourite fruits.

"Oooh, I haven't seen one of those in so long! It's like finding treasure!" she smiled, completely ignoring the new slingshot that Sean had discovered and lifting up one of the tins as if she'd discovered a priceless diamond.
