Notre Dame cathedral on fire - Kyng - 04-15-2019

A fire has broken out at the famous Notre-Dame cathedral in Paris, firefighters say.

The cause is not yet clear, but officials say it could be linked to renovation work.

Images on social media show plumes of smoke billowing into the air above the the 850-year-old Gothic building.

Last year, the Catholic Church in France launched an urgent appeal for funds to save the cathedral, which was starting to crumble.

A major operation is under way to tackle the blaze, which broke out on Monday afternoon, and an area surrounding the building in central Paris has been cleared, officials said.

Very sad to see these horrible pictures :'( . I do hope it doesn't damage this beautiful historic building beyond repair.

Good thing the cause of this isn't believed to be suspicious, though...

First the Glasgow School Of Art (twice), then this? History's fading away... what a shame :(

Well, now, the cathedral's main spire has collapsed:

I can't believe what I'm seeing here :'( .

Indeed :( .

When I heard the cathedral was on fire, I thought, "This is sad: it might damage the roof and set the restoration back a bit". It wasn't until I saw the spire collapsing that I realised it was really, properly awful.

And it could yet get worse. There are fears that one of the two main towers at the front of the cathedral could collapse :( ...

My dad, brother and sister went and saw it last Autumn. Shocking how stuff like this but I hope they are able to recover and do what they can do. Stuff like this happens sometimes, sadly. :(

Well, some comforting news - in that the main structure (including the two bell towers) has been saved:

Also, that spire that collapsed wasn't part of the original 13th-century architecture: it was a 19th-century replica. Still, it was a magnificent piece of work that will take a great deal of time and effort (and likely money) to restore.

And then there's all the artwork and sculptures inside it that will have been lost forever :'( ...

And we don't yet know the cause, which is gonna lead to a firestorm of speculation from all ends of the political spectrum <_<

There has been a trend of cathedrals in France being vandalised or attacked, but given that there was construction going on at Notre Dame, I'm more inclined to believe that this was an electrical fire.
