I don't think "Saddle" + "Light" really sounds like "Satellite": it just doesn't work for me . Maybe it's just because I'm British, and it works better for Americans; I don't know.

It does for sure. It's because North American Englishes (and I think Australian English as well) flap /t/ as well as /d/ between vowels, whereas British Englishes I believe only flap /d/ and pronounce /t/ more fully or make them a glottal stop [ʔ], depending on the dialect.
