Prologue
Flashback
I trekked through the woods, looking for the injured buck everyone was telling me to go and find. I knew he wouldn’t be easy to find. I had my tranquiliser gun in tow, to capture him.
A beautiful White-tailed buck stood proudly, showing off his beautiful antlers. He was a ten-pointer, having five tines on each antler. His pelage was a beautiful greyish-brown with flecks. A massive scar ran from shoulder to his rump. His large, white tail was raised in alarm. His pupils contracted, he knew I was there. A low, guttural sound came from his throat. “Who goes there,” he spoke in a monotone but deep voice. As he turned around, I could see that his back-left leg had been injured somehow. It was a huge wound, oozing and very red and infected. Flies were already buzzing around it.
“It’s just me,” I said quietly, not to frighten him too much. What a massive scar, who knows how he got that! I thought to myself. What’s more worrying is that huge wound on his back leg. It looks infected, and gross! I’m surprised a bear hasn’t found him yet!
“How do you speak deer, human?” he scoffed, dragging his leg through the dirt and creating a rut in the dirt.
“Uhh…” I didn’t know how to answer him. I had my tranquiliser gun in a holster on my right side.
He watched me intently, eyes wide with fear. “Have you come to hurt me?”
“Why would I do that?” I asked.
“Humans caused this!” he moaned in pain, and not bothering to put that leg on the ground. Water welled up a tiny bit in his eyes. He lowered his head, and let out a growl, running towards me.
I was only able to turn around, before he stabbed me in my butt. The way he had angled his head, three of the tines managed to stab it. Excruciating pain coursed through my whole body. I doubled over and lied down on the ground, pain causing me to spasm.
“I have no respect for humans!” he bellowed. He huffed and quickly ran off. I didn’t see him run off, but I could hear the leaves crackling as he did so.
I-I’m alone… I’m alone… I’m screwed… there’s no cell reception, there are pumas, bears, coyotes and wolves… I tried to reach for my phone, but with no luck. It had cracked from the force of his antlers. So much power for such a normally fragile creature.
Despite the pain, I managed to stand up. I saw a large and thick stick, one that could help me walk. I grabbed it and put it under my shoulder. I turned around a noticed a long trail of blood. I guess he didn’t nick my femoral artery, or I’d be dead by now. Spasms of pain continued to course through me.
I must have walked an agonizing forty minutes before I made it half-way through the woods. I turned around again and still saw a trail of blood. So, I guess I’m losing blood every time I take a step. I decided to stop, whether that was a bad idea, I had no idea. I need to the relieve the pressure from the wound, but what I really needed was a hospital.
I heard growling in the distance. sh*t. Something’s searching for me. They can smell the blood dripping. I decided not to stop, but to continue hobbling along. By now, I could feel my underwear and jeans were completely soaked in blood. I could feel it dripping down my thighs. I cursed at myself, wondering why the hell I didn’t just have my tranquiliser gun ready. No, I try and befriend them and make them feel comfortable before shooting them. It had dawned on me, that I was the psychopath, betraying the trust of an animal, and I deserve it.
I deserve it for doing that! How stupid am I? But it’s also not like I’m ever going to see them again! At least I hope I never see the same animal again, that would be bad! But… what happened to that buck? Why did he have such a massive scar from his shoulder to his rump? Was it really a human that did that? It was a single line, which makes me wonder if maybe he got trapped in a contraption or some sort of tool. I’ve treated many animals from being stuck in fences, too. That sore on his left leg was clearly infected. If he doesn’t get help soon, he may die a slow and agonizing death. I shuddered at the thought of him dying of sepsis or losing his leg to gangrene. I can’t imagine dying from something so simple. But… what if I die out here… who’s going to look for me, after a bear drags me off? I must focus on getting back to my cabin and looking after my wounds. At least I’ll have cell reception there. By then, my jeans were so soaked in my own blood that it felt as if I had wet myself. The pain was still agonizing, but I still hobbled along. Hmph. Well, I’m about three-fourths of the way there, at least.
It must have been another agonizing twenty minutes, and I had finally reached my cabin. I wanted to run, but I knew I couldn’t. I tried my best to pick up the pace, but it hurt like hell.
“Well, well, well… what do we have here?” an animal’s voice hissed with a mocking tone. “A human that’s ripe for the picking! Pathetic creatures. Act so tough, yet are so fragile How should I eat you?”
A huge, slinking figure appeared from behind a tree nearest to my cabin. She was a beautiful tawny-brown with a light grey belly. Her legs ended in massive paws, claws already retracted. She hissed, revealing her massive canines, her pink nose was wet as she licked it. Her long, ropey tail swayed pensively.
It’s a Puma! I thought. I gasped. “How I ironic, I understand every word you speak, so nice try.”
“What?” she snapped, growling. Her back legs bunched up, ready to jump. “You’re a fool for walking around bleeding like that! Pathetic human, you are weak creatures!” she snarled.
“Are you sure about that?” I grabbed my gun, but I didn’t time to pick a spot to shoot her.
“Yes!” she roared, jumping.
Poof! was the sound that came out of my gun. The dart hit her straight in the haunches. She instantly keeled over, the force causing her to collapse on the ground. She hissed groggily. Her eyes were glazed over slits, but I could still see the hatred in her eyes. I knew I only had about 30 minutes before she woke up. I quickened my pace and finally made it inside.

Present
I woke up from the flashbacks of my encounters with the deer and cat. I was in a cold sweat, and just soaked head-to-toe. I looked over at my clock and realised it was 8:15. I had then remembered my letter…
