[OLD NEWS] Greggs launch vegan sausage roll - Kyng - 01-05-2019

High street bakery Greggs has confirmed that it is launching a vegan-friendly sausage roll just in time for Veganuary.

Rumours of the development of a vegan sausage roll have been circulating for some time now following strong customer demand.

Earlier this year, a petition for the menu item was even launched by the international animal rights group PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) and garnered more than 20,000 signatures.

In a blog post, PETA said, “More people than ever are clamouring for vegan options from their favourite on-the-go eateries, and PETA urged Greggs to heed this growing demand by launching a vegan sausage roll.”

In December, a leaked email all but confirmed a plant-based version of the pastry dish with a representative writing: “We’re really excited about the launch of the Vegan Sausage Roll as we know you and our customers will be too.”

I personally won't be trying this, because I don't like the non-vegan version of sausage rolls. However, it's clear that it's been a major success: it seems they've been selling out.

Question is, will it remain popular, or is it just a passing fad item?

I want one.

Yeah, I bet :P

According to the second article I linked, the person who tried them said that they "taste pretty much the same" as the non-vegan version. In one way, this is encouraging, because it shows that this is a good-quality product and not a lame stand-in. On the other hand, I think it's only going to replace the non-vegan version if there's a reason why a non-vegan would choose it on a regular basis. That reason could be that the vegan version tastes better, is healthier, or is cheaper - but, without having seen or tried the product, I don't know which of these would be true.

Whether vegan or not, a sausage roll would still taste the same for me ;)

It has more protein too:

Fad or not, they’re making money off of this for now. I heard about this on Twitter and we have a Greggs here so maybe I should see if they have one. It’s a great way to encourage people to try vegan food even if it’s just to have a taste. I’ve had Quorn before and it wasn’t bad. It’s just something different and we should be open minded about it. :)

Oh yeah, and of course, this must be delightful news for the vegetarians and vegans.

I tried one for the first time today. It was quite nice and tasty.

I'd be interested in trying one, especially given I'm not a fan of normal sausage rolls because of the idea of where they've come from (mystery meat and all that :P ). At least with a vegan product, you know you're getting something they've put a bit more effort into.

RE: Greggs launch vegan sausage roll - Kyng - 03-23-2019

Yeah, that's certainly true: if you want to enjoy sausages, then you probably don't want to know how they're made. The vegan version has no such problems.

(I still won't be trying one, though, because my dislike of sausages has nothing to do with how they're made: I simply don't enjoy the taste! Part of it's because I don't like pork in general, and part of it's because the texture is awful)

Not that it would be able to get one, but a welcome addition nonetheless :)
