As Kyle conjured another wall of dirt on top of his original one, a soldier who had been on the verge of climbing over the old wall suddenly found his hands trapped underneath all the new dirt.

"GET ME OUT!" he cried, as he begged his comrades to stop his hands from being crushed under the pressure. "I can't take this!!!!"

Kyle winced spotting that. Sighing, as he felt guilty, he made a very small gap where the soldier's hands were. Not big enough to climb to the other side, but enough to get free on the side where the rest of the soldiers were.

"I got it," the soldier gasped, as he glanced down at his hands - which were completely sore and covered in dirt, but happily still there.

"Someone go get a mage," one of his colleagues recommended. "Or a battering ram. Or something that can blast this cursed barrier down!"

One of the soldiers nodded and ran off to find someone. By the time he returned with one the Aliana, Rupert, and Lysander had made it back up to Kyle and Ben.

"Yay, you're safe !" Benjamin exclaimed, as he hugged Aliana, Rupert and Lysander with his weedy little arms.

"Okay, so what now ?" Aliana asked, looking a little confused. "Do we just wait up here for them to come and round us up or something? Or wait for Mr Ma... - I mean, Kyle, to knock them all out with his Earth magic?"

"Well, if it was just me up here I wouldn't bother to do anything. I mean they can't really touch me even if they did make it up here." Kyle said. "But you guys can't stay trapped up here so I gotta make them leave. Not sure how..." he said pausing. "I mean I guess I could throw a bunch of earth magic at them, but I don't want to hurt them either. Or maybe I could go down and try to get them to leave..."

Ben frowned. "Isn't that a bit dangerous...going down there? Won't they just capture you?"

"Well, I'm sure they'll get bored or hungry eventually," Aliana suggested. "They'll go away when they run out of food. They can't outlast us, not when we have all these biscuits...."

Suddenly, Aliana heard a distinct rumbling coming from beneath her, as the ground under her tail began to shake and vibrate...

"That isn't my stomach... I'm full now ..."

"I...I'm not sure..." Kyle said looking around. "Its never done that here..." he peered out the window and gasped.

Apparently the mage had been able to knock down Kyle's wall with his own earth magic.

"Crud, they got a mage...knocked down my wall!" Kyle said frowning. "They'll be able to get up here..."

There is another way we can block them... a voice spoke in Kyle's head. It was the magic that had merged with him. It sometimes spoke to him like this. You can create a barrier around here. Not an earth one, a purely magic one. It will keep them out, however it takes a lot of energy. I'm not sure how long you could hold it. It could be dangerous...

"I don't care. I'll do that..." Kyle said softly. "Okay," he said speaking louder for the others to hear. "I can make another barrier, this one will just be magical. It'll keep them out." he said, before shutting his eyes to concentrate better. He glowed for a moment, as he worked on the new barrier.

Outside, right in front of the army a bright green light shone, and covered the rest of the mountain.

Kyle grunted, going down on one knee, opening his bright green eyes. It was taking more out of him then he thought it would...

The mage attempted to blast through the barrier, just as he had smashed past Kyle's earth wall. The magical wall resisted his attacks; however, Kyle and his friends felt the full force of the impact from inside the cave, like a punch to the stomach.

All the while, the echo of rumbling from underground continued to grow louder and stronger...

"Oh, great ..." Aliana groaned. "I think they might be trying to tunnel up to here..."

“I...I got it...” he grunted as he extended the barrier to block it from underground. After that Kyles face was rather pale as it took even more out of him.
