Flickr limits free users to 1000 images - Kyng - 11-10-2018

Bad news for non-paying Flickr users: the formerly Yahoo-owned photo sharing site will be reducing its free cloud storage limit from a whopping 1TB to just 1,000 pictures, with plans to start deleting excess images early next year.

Announced via blog post by Andrew Stadlen, VP of Product at Flickr, users on the site's Free tier will permanently lose access to any stored photos exceeding the new limit from February 2019.

According to Stadlen, the decision was partly made due to the small number of free users who actually exceeded the new limit.

"We looked at our members and found a clear line between Free and Pro accounts: the overwhelming majority of Pros have more than 1,000 photos on Flickr, and more than 97% of Free members have fewer than 1,000."

According to Flickr, “The free terabyte largely attracted members who were drawn by the free storage, not by engagement with other lovers of photography." To be honest, this sounds like a BS cover story to me.

But, perhaps this change is necessary, and the free terabyte doesn't make economic sense for them. However, even if it is, I think deleting photos is just asking for trouble - especially when people come back months or later to find most of their photos gone -_- . It'd make more sense just to grandfather in any existing photos, and just restrict future uploads.

I forgot Flickr even existed.

Even that, you can still upload as many as you like. Unless you're a mad photographer who takes like millions of the same model :P Although, 500px's decision to limit seven per week for free users was more of a thing to get upset about (when last time it was 20 per week).

I have to admit, I don't think I've even heard of 500px :P . But, yeah, that does sound rather annoying - especially for people who upload their photos in batches -_-

I guess I'll stick with Flickr, though, since I'm still well under 1,000 photos (and will likely never hit that milestone).

Its PR speak for we want to limit stuff so we will just "say" there is a small number of users when really its like the whole platform.

At least it's nowhere near as bad as Photobucket's demand for ransom.

Photobucket is easily the worst of them all, they've always been kind of crappy though.

There are other image hosting sites out there.
