A greedy snake got more than it bargained for - when it swallowed an entire mousetrap.

The stricken serpent - a prairie rattlesnake - was discovered by New Mexico animal sanctuary Cottonwood Rehab.

Thankfully, a vet was able to perform delicate surgery to remove the offending trap - which still had an unfortunate rodent in it.

Cottonwood Rehab explained: "When you think you have seen it all. Got to work with a four star snake wrangler to save this rattlesnake from its stupidity.

Yeah, not the wisest snake in the world, I have to say  ! But I suppose they only see a tasty meal, and they don't understand how mousetraps work :P .

I'm just glad a vet was able to perform surgery... I can't imagine it would have been easy at all!

Wow! I suppose if you've got the jaw for it...

I'm glad the snake was discovered and the mousetrap removed. Just goes to show that even something innocuous like a mousetrap can have unintended consequences for other creatures. Reminds me of pesticides affecting wildlife other than the pests.
